UltraMatta. Roberto Matta's surprising adventure in the world of design

Paradisoterrestre Gallery | Bologna

2019

As part of ART CITY Bologna 2019, on the occasion of Arte Fiera, Paradisoterrestre is hosting in its home in via De' Musei 4, the exhibition UltraMatta that pays tribute to the special bond between Matta and the capital of Emilia-Romagna.

Almost 50 years after the few pieces made by Matta, the limited edition re-editions of Margarita and Sacco Alato are presented, functional works of art that are transformed into design pieces and revisit the concept of Ultramobile, promoted by Dino Gavina in 1971 to introduce the surprising effect of the surrealist object into everyday life.

Margarita, first cast in bronze to capture an idea, represents the open stem of a daisy, transformed into a tribal throne.

Sacco Alato was created in the foundry from a sandbag, melted and split in two. It is a seat/sculpture with large stones found in the street as feet.

The exhibition is completed by two iconic pieces from Paradisoterrestre's historical archive: Malitte (1966), a wall that transforms from a sculpture into a living room, and MAgriTTA, a seat that pays homage to René Magritte and which, like Margarita and Sacco Alato, is part of the 1971 Ultramobile operation.

Matt a's creative force emerges also in design and his works come back to life today, thanks to the re-editions of Paradisoterrestre, with the same exuberance and the same power to strike and surprise.
